Etón E1 Gone, E1XM Remains

E1XM, SATELLITE READY

Universal Radio’s Fred Osterman writes and their website confirms:

The plain Etón E1 is gone, but we still have a very big supply of E1XM units. There was less than a $20 difference between the two models.

The E1XM, however, is not marketed outside North America.

Sounds like E1XM is a very slow seller now, with a stock for many months (years?).

Hmmmm, I wonder what Eton’s strategy is here. They have discontinued their flagship radio? Yet they have plenty of the E1XM, which is undoubtedly a slow seller. Doesn’t seem to make much sense. Are they planning on replacing the E1 with something else? Or is the Satellit 750 supposed to do? The way that they add and drop products is head-scratching.

On a similar note: hey Ed., when are we going to see something on the new Grundig G3 Globe Traveler and the Grundig G8 Traveler II? I’d sure love to see a thorough test and comparison on these before running out to buy one!

According to Universal Radio’s web site, the Grundig G3 has been delayed until 7/20.

Hopefully you’ll get your hands on one in time to include a full review in the 2010 Passport.

Tecsun PL300WT (a.k.a. Grundig G8) has been on sale for some time in mainland China. My impression is that the majority of users are happy with it. Also, it seems that some EBay seller have started selling this Si4734-based DSP radio now.

  5. Gary Kinsman Says:

Regarding the G8, it’s available for $50 with free shipping at Amazon. The PL-300WT is $50 plus $25 shipping on eBay.

From the reviews so far on the Yahoo ultralightdx group, the G8 and PL-300WT are sensitive on the AM and FM broadcast bands, but not on LW and SW. The DSP-based IF filtering provides excellent selectivity. Apparently SW is full of MW images.

I ordered one for the MW and FM capability. I have plenty of other radios that do well on SW.

I’ve been tweeking the Grundig G8. Needs more signal, but selectivitity is excellent. With 10 ft of wire and an alligator clip it really cooks. No ant. jack. The headphone cord near your body helps a lot. Using the S/N meter to ferret out and filter out interference is a wonderful addition, for AM null, FM pointing, or SW filtering out of PC interference (I coiled a long headphone extension, blocked laptop noise, S/N went from 2 to 26!). Trying foil ground coupling next. There’s an excellent SW tuner in this thing. Really nice noise and spurious rejection. Coupling gnd/ant or adding a simple FET preamp would complete the picture. The AM wants a little more signal too. The little Terk AM Advantage did the job. AM and SW are very similar, actually. FM is out of this world. You can peck apart all the college band stuff easily. The S/N is valuable, once again: nulling strong stations, and your PC.
